Fuerteventura · Sotavento

Sotavento is a long southeast-coast system, not a permanent flat-water lagoon. The tidal lagoon, exposed beach, and main break can present materially different water and wind on the same day.

Conditions & water

Kite tuition and supervised practice
René Egli publishes beginner through advanced kite instruction in the tidal lagoon or open sea as conditions allow. Its Advanced Pool offers supervised equipment hire from waterstart level. A lagoon description is not an open-sea water-style promise, and this kite programme does not inherit the separate windsurf season assessment. Lagoon instruction and open-sea windsurfing differ
René Egli describes a tidal training lagoon and publishes a lagoon timetable. Its teaching programme spans several skill levels. Fuerteventura Tourism distinguishes learning water from the stronger main-break area and identifies summer as the more consistent trade-wind period. A lagoon match depends on usable water on the chosen day. How map references work

A point can mark a useful access, business, or approximate area reference. It does not establish a legal riding-zone boundary, guaranteed launch, safe depth, or current access permission.

Access & safety

Strong wind and changing lagoon coverage
The official guide says summer north-easterlies can exceed 50 knots and separates beginner water from the main break. The lagoon is not a constant lake, so level, tide, and exposure must be checked together. Sources: Fuerteventura Tourism · Playa de Sotavento, René Egli · Sotavento wingfoil centre.

Not a live safety service. Recheck local notices, closures, access, weather, and water conditions before every session.

Plan the trip

Parking is documented at Sotavento
Fuerteventura Tourism lists parking and restaurant facilities for the Sotavento windsurf location. Capacity and the best access for a specific centre still need a same-day check. Sources: Fuerteventura Tourism · Playa de Sotavento.

Choose the sector before the accommodation
The public guide distinguishes a learning area from the stronger main-break area. Confirm whether your course uses Playa Barca, Risco del Paso, or another beach before booking transfers. First-hand discussions can suggest questions to ask locally. They do not verify access, depth, current conditions, or suitability.

beginner timing

Community observation

Recent riders describe calmer lesson windows and much harder conditions when the wind builds. This is anecdotal context only; the school decides whether the day and sector suit the rider.

Windsurf rider observations · lagoon and open sea

Community observation

A September 2024 r/windsurfing discussion describes contrasting Sotavento visits: gusty open-sea sailing, chop and demanding wind, plus lagoon sessions constrained by shallow tidal water. Other contributors discuss lighter autumn conditions. These are dated personal experiences, rather than depth measurements or a seasonal forecast.
